As you may have well noticed already, StimulatedBoredom.com has a new look (!) and I wanted to take a moment to walk you through some of the new changes and features, in addition to how I envision the website being utilized going forward in conjunction with the talk show and podcast.
My biggest complaint about the old website was that it was too ‘static’ and that not enough information could be easily changed, updated or added without expanding the size of the site (and therefore the clutter) or the need to navigate too deeply into the site to find new information. It simply was not designed in such a way (as the original ‘designer’, I have only myself to blame) to be conducive to return traffic and interaction, as it was not laid out to make new content easily accessible and obvious.
At nearly 400,000 visits, it has lived a good life…but it was time to put the old girl down.
So I set out to remedy this and the end result is the site that you are seeing now. 🙂
To do this, I employed the help of my close friend Patrick (whom many of you have heard me reference on the show numerous times), who is one of the most creative, smartest and innovative people that I know. As I have been wanting to redesign the site for many years, Patrick has been party to multiple discussions relating to what I wanted to eventually accomplish; he is also a listener of the show and the combination of our personal relationship and being a fan of the program was advantageous to understanding the look and feel I was going for.
I also wanted to take a moment to thank the many listeners who offered their help when I mentioned on the show that I wanted to begin the re-design. Although I did not choose your design, I am very appreciative of the time and effort you were kind enough to give me. 🙂
Check out some of the new changes after the break!
Overall Look & Feel
+ New Features and Additions
The underlying principle for the redesign was to create a way for listeners to interact more seamlessly with the program and with each other; in addition to a way for me to consistently provide new content outside of the talk show to keep their boredom stimulated. The website will act as an extension of the program, therefore it will retain the core principles of the show by entertaining and educating visitors in a conversational way. This was accomplished by adding the following:
Blogs: This will be the most updated part of the site outside of the show. Therefore, easy-to-access categories were created (and added to the main & sub pages) to make finding this content simpler and to allow visitors to jump right into the conversation and share their own thoughts and opinions.
Blog content will range from the political, historical and scientific, current events and book recommendations…to music & movies, technology and/or miscellaneous topics of general interest. Some blogs will be robust discussions and opinion, whereas others could be quick anecdotes, polls, requests for feedback or thoughts I felt like sharing.
Blogs / Categories will be updated with new content often.
Social Media Integration: The entire website is fully integrated and compatible with social media. You can directly ‘Like’ a post and/or share it on Facebook through the site (via Facebook Connect), re-Tweet posts, subscribe to the blogs via RSS and be updated when new content is posted, Digg etc. Did you comment on a blog or think others might find it interesting? Now you can effortlessly link it directly to your own social media channels!
Mobile Experience: StimulatedBoredom.com goes mobile! Direct your phone’s browser to the website address and it will default to a clean and easy to navigate mobile site…I am particularly fond of this addition! Recent blogs and content will display on your phone without having to side-scroll to view the web version of the site. See a blog title that grabs your attention? Simply click on the entry and start reading, sharing and commenting right from your phone!
You can also navigate the main pages of the site (i.e. “This Week On Stimulated Boredom”, “FAQ”, “Meet the Host” etc) by using the pull down menu (down facing arrow) to the right on the show title on the top of the mobile version.
It’s a great way to keep up-to-date when you are on the go, in a way that is optimized for your phone. You also have the ability to toggle the mobile version on and off, should you wish to view the full web version of the site. The mobile version is currently set to default for easier viewing and navigation on your phone.
News Flash: Quickly and easily see website and show related updates. This can be found in the upper left-hand corner of the website. This is where I will post brief updates relating to new blogs, if I am taking a week off, additional features that were added, when new videos are posted etc.
Listening to the Show: All of the same listening options are available (i.e. iTunes, Live365.com, RSS etc), however I have made it easier to do so. Quick launch icons have been added to the top of the website that will allow you to launch your listening option of choice. Additionally, a quick breakdown of the current week’s show segments are on display and now you have the ability to directly select and start listening to a particular segment via the podcast stream. Or you can select / click on, “This Week on Stimulated Boredom” to be taken to a topics page that provides a synopsis of each week’s topics of discussion and a handy player for each segment to start listening immediately.
Write For StimulatedBoredom.com!: This is one of my favorite new additions. 🙂 Now you have the ability to be a guest writer for the website and the show! This new feature is intended for you to write about what you are passionate about, what you want to talk about and what you want other listeners to comment on or be aware of.
If there is a topic or story of interest to you that I am not covering on the show, you can submit an article / blog to be considered for inclusion on the site. For instance, if you are one of my international listeners and you want to talk about something happening in your country that you think others would find interesting…or perhaps you are passionate about animal rights, gun rights, the environment, music, something happening in the news or even a TV show…now you have an outlet to share your thoughts and allow listeners in all 50 states and over 95 countries to comment on it! Guest Writer submissions can range from simply asking a question that you want others to respond to…all the way up to a full-fledged, well formed discussion / opinion of a particular topic.
You can submit your content for Guest Writer consideration by choosing the appropriate link at the bottom of the site. I have also included a few quick writing tips and a helpful tutorial video to help you get started. I am sincerely looking forward to reading about what’s important to you and what’s on your mind!
Twitter Stream: Just looking for some quick entertainment? Now you can see a few of the most recent Tweets from my Twitter profile streaming along the bottom-right of the main page.
Other: Many of the old features from the previous site are still available, just now more accessible. Looking for Stimulated Boredom merchandise? Want to access previous shows (to date over 300 segments) via the downloadable Archive? Perhaps you want to pin your location on the Guest Map and let others know where you listen from. All of these options are still available on the new site.
Additionally, all of the old pages (i.e. “Meet the Host”, “About SB” “FAQ” etc) have been tossed out and completely re-written and updated.
I think that about sums it up (?), but feel free to bounce around the site and familiarize yourself with all of the new changes. 🙂 Now that the site is set up to more easily accommodate new content, I plan to update and post often in order to develop it as an additional hub for you to go to often and consistently find new information, interesting articles, opinion and blogs, book reviews & recommendations, music, polls, requests for feedback / comments, new SB videos and of course, the flagship of the site, the actual talk show itself!
Thanks so much for taking the time to hone up on all of the new changes and please feel free to let me know what you think: email@example.com
I would love to hear what you like, dislike and ways to fine tune the site into a daily / weekly favorite place for you to visit!
