I’m certainly not the first – nor will I be the last – person to share the newest ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens‘ trailer, but if you’re one of the few people in the world who have yet to experience it, I highly recommend that you check it out before reading any further!
You see, as someone who is just old enough to remember having seen The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi while they were still in theaters, the Star Wars mythology played a substantial role in my young, impressionable and creative imagination.
In fact, they left such an indelible mark on me that I continue to rate the first Star Wars trilogy as one of the most influential film series of my life, and directly led to many of the things that I am passionate and geeky about today. They instilled a sense of wonder and adventure in me, defined what heroes and villains were, and kick-started my already overactive imagination in ways that no other films have.
As I discussed in a recent Star Wars post, I experienced these films at a time and age in which nothing like them had ever existed or come before. They weren’t borrowing from tried and true science-fiction tropes, but were literally inventing them as they went along, in ways that countless films have copied and emulated since.
The special effects were groundbreaking, and new technologies were invented specifically to help realize George Lucas’ vision for this new galaxy far far away.
Anyone familiar with the history of Star Wars knows that Episode IV: A New Hope was projected to be a complete and utter flop at the box office, with many of the foreign actors in the film – including David Prowse, the actor who donned the Darth Vader suit – having no idea what the hell they were creating, often describing it as “silly” or “weird.”
What followed was one of the biggest successes and crazes in motion picture history – a craze which still resonates today – judging from the frenzy over the new Force Awakens film, and the fact that ticket sales have completely obliterated previous pre-sale records 10 times over; crashing every major movie ticket buying website in the process. Need further evidence? Just check eBay, where opening weekend tickets are selling for as high as $1000.
But I’m getting into the weeds here, let’s get back to the latest trailer.
Judging from the reaction that the trailer and new film is receiving, there is clearly a strong desire – whether nostalgic or otherwise – for another Star Wars film.
Taking place roughly 30 years after the events of Return of the Jedi, The Force Awakens will introduce some new characters in Rey, Finn, Poe, BB-8 and Kylo…but also bringing back our favorite and most beloved rag-tag team of rebels in Han Solo, Leia Organa, Luke Skywalker, Chewbacca, R2-D2, C-3PO and others.
Here Are Some Thoughts That Occurred to Me While Watching the EPIC New Trailer:
Due to an incredibly genius marketing campaign and my affection towards the franchise, I am beyond excited to finally see Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
I was one of the millions of people who helped crash the Fandango website – frantically (and desperately) refreshing the app and website repeatedly – and was thankfully able to secure tickets on opening night (Dec 17th). I will, no doubt, also be seeing it multiple times before it finally leaves the theaters.
Although the days are long behind us in which we’d have to wait in line for hours – even days – to see a new Star Wars film, this is one of the only movies in recent history that would warrant such dedication and fervor. Also, since I am seeing it on opening night, I sincerely hope to be treated to some incredible cosplay. 🙂
How about you? Did you like the new trailer? Did something stand out to you that I forgot to mention? Were you able to get tickets for opening weekend?
